Sanssouci was the summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The palace was bult in 1745 and is located in Potsdam, Germany.

Sanssouci is part of UNESCO World Heritage site Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin.

Hovedøya Island | Norway

Hovedøya is one of several small islands off the coast of Oslo, Norway in the Oslofjord. The island is quite small, no more than 800 metres across in any direction. It is known for its lush and green nature. The island is a popular destination for tourists and bathers.

The map of Svalbard

The Svalbard archipelago is the northernmost part of the Kingdom of Norway. It lies completely within the Arctic Circle, so the sun is above the horizon for 24 hours a day from late April to late August.

The polar archipelago of Svalbard was first discovered by Willem Barentsz in 1596. Old maps exist but the detailed mapping of Svalbard started a little over 100 years ago. At this time Swedes and Russians carried out a major survey that was part of a project to determine the size and shape of the Earth. The Norwegian mapping of Svalbard started a few years later.

Our Lady of Ljeviš | Serbia

Our Lady of Ljeviš is a 14th-century Serbian Orthodox church in the town of Prizren, located in southern Kosovo. It was converted to a mosque during the Ottoman Empire and then back into a church in the early 20th century.

The church is part of the UNESCO world Heritage site inscribed under the name 'Medieval Monuments in Kosovo'. Together with four Serbian Orthodox monasteries: Dečani, Patriarchate of Peć and Gračanica.

This remarkable complex, named after Bishop Cabañas, which incorporates several unusual features designed specifically to meet the needs of its occupants, was unique for its time.

The Palace of Venaria is one of the former Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, included in the list of World Heritage sites by UNESCO in 1997.

Völklinger Hütte“, founded in 1873, is now the worldwide only remaining ironworks from the iron and steel industry’s heyday. It was closed down in 1986 and today it is a theme park where visitors can explore the former work place of the ironworkers.

Völklingen Ironworks is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bamberg | Germany

Bamberg is located in southern Germany in the north of Bavaria. It is a good example of a central European town with a basically early medieval plan and many surviving ecclesiastical and secular buildings of the medieval period.

The Old Town Hall was built around 1467 on an artificial island in the middle of the River Regnitz. The Town of Bamberg is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Hluboká Castle is a historic château situated in the town of Hluboká nad Vltavou. The history of this fairytale castle started in the 13th century with a military fortification. Over the centuries the castle evolved into a Baroque style masterpiece.

Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley; it was built to serve as a hunting lodge for King Francis I of France (1494- 1547).

The "Chateau and Estate of Chambord", which was previously inscribed on the World Heritage List, is now part of the "Loire Valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes".

The fortress of Bomarsund was built during the years 1832-1854. Åland was Russian at the time and the fortress was intended for the Russian contingents on the islands.

The fortress was thoroughly ruined in 1854 when attacked by the allied English-Frenchmen. At that time only two towers of the planned twelve subsidiary towers of the fortress had been completed.

Pandas at Ocean Park | Hong Kong

On Wednesday 12 April, the giant pandas Xing Ya and Wu Wen landed on Dutch soil. Soon they start a new life at Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen, Netherlands. There are an additional 120 pandas in zoos throughout the world. The postcard shows two pandas living in Ocean Park, Hong Kong.

The idea of pandas as gifts is known as 'panda diplomacy' and it has a long tradition in China. Panda diplomacy describes how the Chinese authorities let chosen governments keep pandas as a mark of respect between their countries. In the 1980s China moved away from 'gifting pandas' to countries, and instead started to loan them out.

Scott Base | New Zealand

The Ross Dependency is a region of Antarctica that is claimed by New Zealand. The Scott Base is an Antarctic research facility located on Ross Island.

The Fiordland Crested Penguin is a penguin species endemic to New Zealand. It currently breeds along the south-western coasts of New Zealand's South Island as well as on Stewart Island/Rakiura and its outlying islands. But not in the Ross Dependency.

The Ross Sea seafloor is home to thousands of animals, many of which cannot be found anywhere else. The stamp is part of a set of 5 stamps, only valid for sending mail from Ross Dependency.

Petäjävesi Old Church, in central Finland, was built of logs between 1763 and 1765. This Lutheran country church is a typical example of an architectural tradition that is unique to eastern Scandinavia. It combines the Renaissance conception of a centrally planned church with older forms deriving from Gothic groin vaults.

El Valle de Antón | Panama

The small town of El Valle de Antón is located about 120 km from Panama City. The village, with 6,200 inhabitants is nestled in the huge caldera of an extinct volcano.

With an extensive network of trails, this is a superb place for walking, hiking or horseback riding. Nearby forests offer excellent birdwatching, and the valleys of El Valle are home to an impressive set of waterfalls as well as the increasingly rare golden frog.

The Western Ghats is a chain of mountains running parallel to India’s western coast, approximately 30-50 km inland. The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is an International Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats.

Schönbrunn Palace | Austria

From the 18th century to 1918, Schönbrunn was the residence of the Habsburg emperors. The origins of the palace dates back to the first half of the 16th century. A small hunting lodge and later summer residence of the Habsburg family was rebuilt after total destruction during the last Turkish attack in 1683. During construction work the project was expanded into an Imperial summer residence of the court.

The 1,441-room Baroque palace is one of the most important architectural, cultural, and historical monuments in Austria and a major tourist attraction.

Paestum was a major ancient Greek city on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Magna Graecia (southern Italy). The ruins of Paestum are famous for their three ancient Greek dating from about 600 to 450 BC. The card shows the second temple of Hera.

Paestum is part of Unesco World Heritage site inscribed under the name Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park with the Archeological Sites of Paestum and Velia, and the Certosa di Padula.

Sanahin Monastery | Armenia

Sanahin Monastery is an Armenian monastery founded in the 10th century in the Lori Province of Armenia.

The monstery is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is inscribed under the name Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin. Both were important centres of learning. Sanahin was renown for its school of illuminators and calligraphers. According to Unesco, the two monastic complexes represent the highest flowering of Armenian religious architecture.

Hansestadt Greifswald | Germany

Greifswald is a city in northeastern Germany. Its official name is University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald. At the end of the 13th century Greifswald became one of the earliest members of the Hanseatic League.

Formidably gabled buildings and brick houses line one of the most beautiful historic market squares in the entire North of Germany. The origins of the Town Hall (the building in red) date back to 13th century.

Hanseatic city Helmstedt | Germany

Helmstedt is a town on the eastern edge of the German state of Lower Saxony. This hitoric city, first mentioned in the year 952, joined the hanseatic league in 1426. For over 400 years, the Hanseatic League played a major role in shaping economies, trade and politics in the North Sea and Baltic Sea.

The University of Helmstedt was a university in Helmstedt that existed from 1576 until 1810. The university was built in the Weser Renaissance style (just like the town hall of Paderborn in the previous post).
